ORDER OF THE SPOON
The Order of the Spoon is awarded on an ad hoc basis.
The award is a distinction, recognizing a particular action during a
re-enactment or recognizing long-term service to the U. S. Frontier
Brigade.
The choice of a spoon as a symbol dates back to an
incident during the first Red River Campaign re-enactment. Certain troops
came to burn a woodpile so that it would not fall into "enemy" hands. A
civilian refugee tried to fend off the troops by using her wooden spoon as a
weapon to prevent the burning of the woodpile. The spoon failed miserably
as a weapon, but it now serves as an exemplary symbol.
The spoon
is now in the possession of the Keeper of the Spoon, and is brought to select
events when new members have been selected for induction into The Order of
the Spoon.
